x402 revives the HTTP 402 status code to let agents pay per request in stablecoins or cards; created by Coinbase, it moved to vendor-neutral governance when the Linux Foundation announced the x402 Foundation's operational launch on 14 July 2026 with 40 members including AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard and Stripe.
