Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Anthropic's open tool/context protocol, now hosted by the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation.
Anthropic donated the Model Context Protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation (a Linux Foundation directed fund) on 9 December 2025, when it reported 97M+ monthly SDK downloads across Python and TypeScript and more than 10,000 active public MCP servers; the foundation was co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI.
Caveat: Sponsorship is often misstated: OpenAI is a co-founder of the foundation, not merely a sponsor; Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg are supporters. The 97M download figure is a December 2025 snapshot and has since grown.
